Reflections 9th birthday – 8th July 2025

Vikki came to help us celebrate our birthday – 9 years of fun & friendship.

She sang hot tunes for a hot day.

Wordsearches continue to be very popular. New ones are offered each time we meet.

The heatwave couldn’t keep the dancers from the dance floor.

Janet and I were pleased to welcome Karlee, the new ASDA Community Life Champion. Thank you to Karlee and Asda for the wonderful donation of cakes, biscuits and squash. We wish her every success in her role and hope she visits us again soon.

Introducing Helen, our Librarian. Helen runs our Carers Library. She is always on hand with a smile and a listening ear if carers want to chat. She gives out free information booklets, and checks out and back items from our library which includes books, dvds and puzzles. She also ensures members are informed about any upcoming events we are made aware of that are happening in the community, by updating our Community Noticeboard.

How lovely it was to arrive this week to find this birthday greeting waiting for us! Thank you to Kath, the Shrewsbury House Manager for making it for us.

Julian Garman – 24th June 2025

Julian sang a great medley of ’70s and ’80s hits.

It was surprising how many songs the members could sing along to. As usual the dance floor was packed despite the heat because if it’s Tuesday afternoon it’s party time.

Crafting and biscuits go well together.

Group members enjoy word searches and reminiscence in small groups.

Janet and I were pleased to welcome Fatmata, the new Service Development Manager at the Greenwich Carers Centre. We wish her every success in her role and hope she visits again soon.

Introducing Marilyn. Marilyn is a versatile team member. She puts out the biscuits at the start of the session, wipes down the tablecloths at the end of the first hour, joins in activities as needed and is a keen dancer. As can be seen in this photo she is always happy and smiling.

Mark Sedgwick – 10th June 2025

Two sessions in a row from our ever popular crooner.

Mark saves the day! He stepped-in at the last moment, when our booked entertainer was unwell.

Group members continue to show how creative they are under the guidance of Dave.

Everyone enjoyed the singing and dancing in the second hour.

We thank all our wonderful volunteers this Volunteers week: Dot, Lynne, Pearl, Dave, Janet, Helen, Tony, Lucia, Gyda and Ann. Mary, Marilyn and Peter missed this session, but we thank them too. (Mark photobombed the photo).

Introducing Pearl, our health and safety lead. Pearl is responsible for checking in people into our register, so we have a record of people at the sessions. This is essential in case of a fire and for our statistics.

Mark Sedgwick – 27th May 2025

Mark warmed up the group on a rainy day.

We all sang along to some great tunes.

Searching out the missing letters to make a name badge is always a challenging though fun activity. The badges help us to know who we all are.

Today, we were delighted to welcome back Professor Andrew with his colleague Gill from the University of Greenwich. As part of the Institute for Lifecourse Development’s overseas work, they brought along Purity who is setting up a dementia group in Kenya and is interested in comparing how people in the UK with dementia are treated compared to Kenya. It was a chance for us to showcase to Purity the work we do and share ideas. She enjoyed her visit and told us at the end what a joyous atmosphere could be felt at the group.

After their visit we were so pleased to receive an email from Andrew with the following comment “Thank you so much for inviting us to Reflections this week and making us feel so welcome.  It was lovely to visit again, catch up with people, and see the fantastic activities, friendships and support you and the volunteers continue to facilitate.  Reflections is such a vital way of ensuring people impacted by dementia – including care partners and family members – can remain connected and engaged.”

We do what we do to make a difference to the lives of people living in Greenwich with dementia and their family. To receive such a comment like this from a professional is a wonderful bonus. Thank you Andrew.

A big turn-out gave us a packed dance floor. More fun and enjoyment in 2 weeks time.

On a hot day, Tony raised the temperature further with some hot tunes from the 1960s and 70s.

He turned up the amplifier and provided an hour’s worth of sing-along tunes.

Once again, the outdoor sports were popular. Team member Marilyn was helping activity lead Mary today as our other activity lead Tony, had a holiday

The “Ring of Fire” was a fitting ending to a hot day at Shrewsbury House. This popular song of Tony’s alway’s brings the roof down.

Team members Dot, Gyda, Peter and Pearl took the opportunity to sit down and recover by the open door.

The Call to Mind reminiscence game was popular. Team members Ann and Lucia host two tables of the game for up to three couples. It’s a great way to share life experiences and find out more about other members.

After Angelika’s session, a packed room of dancers enjoyed an hour of fun. The joint was jumping.
